Play the game!

The Idea

Design Deli Digital Football started with the tiny handheld games that asked your imagination to do most of the rendering. A handful of red lights became a running back, a defensive line, and an entire field. I wanted to rebuild that same compact tension in the browser while wrapping it in the oversized promise of a vintage full-page toy ad.

Vintage football player artwork
Vintage player art helps sell the feeling of discovering the game in the back pages of an old sports magazine.

The Game

The computer is always on defense. Start a play, move through the lanes, avoid incoming tacklers, and keep pushing the ball downfield. Downs, yards to go, field position, scoring, kicking, and the game clock turn the simple LED field into a real drive. Two speed settings let you choose how aggressively the defense closes in.

The Build

The handheld is drawn in the browser with React, TypeScript, and CSS rather than relying on a photograph of a toy. Layered stadium rings, molded controls, LED readouts, button states, sound cues, and a responsive control layout give the object weight while keeping the game playable with a keyboard, mouse, or touch screen.

The Wrapper

The landing page treats the game like a product launch from another era. Bold display type, aged print texture, dramatic player art, short-form sales copy, and the tilted handheld create the ad first. Pressing Play shifts that static promise into the working game without leaving the page.
